“Even though they’re just kids, they epitomize what’s great about surfing!” Drew Wellman, an artist who has been plying his trade for many years. Will open his one-man show, “The Little Heroes” at the Deus Gallery Canggu at 6pm on the 31st May 2013. Drew’s subject matter aren’t ordinary children, they’re a group of gentlemen from a forgotten time. They come from a place at the edge of our so-called civilized world. Precise moments captured. They are looking back at you. Hands resting confidently on hips, a stance, an expression, their bearing. These boys are proud. Proud like their fathers. They are true children of the sea. Their fathers are fishermen. Their fathers before. Naught has changed. These little heroes … View More
Spontaneous and unprepared. Deliberated and relaxed. Observing and bemused. Hard to pick a pair of words to sum up the vibe of last Sundays opening of Ty Williams’ art show ‘Hot and Crowded’ at the Deus Gallery. What started life as a surf trip to Bali, his second. Along the way it transmuted. Coupled with chance encounters and conversations that’s led to this amazing opportunity for both Ty and us. Bare walls that need filling and here he was without even so much as a pencil to scribble. Ty arrived and compiled, from the ground up. He defined his own spiritual Bali encounter with what’s comfortable for him. Art. Made on the spot, not a scrap bought in. The distillation of … View More
The Roman’s coined the word ‘Praeterlabor’ two thousand years ago. It’s Latin, as you might have guessed and the definition is; to glide or slip past, Flow. Do you think those Roman’s might have grimaced, if they knew back then, that we would be applying it to surfing and art today? A fluid line up of artists will be hanging across the fine walls of the Deus Gallery; Jack Coleman, Mia Taninaka, Alex Knost, Dustin Humphrey, Dane Peterson, Nicolas Chalmers & Andrew Wellman, all of whom have produced works to stream into your consciousness. At first take this group seems rather random, nothing more than just a collection of artists. Scratch the surface though and you find that they do … View More
Amidst the calmly collected chaos that was the Deus Slidetober Fest event, an art exhibition opened, an art exhibition that had been in the works for pretty much all of the past year. Stevie Gee, or as we call him ‘Sleazy G’ has been a collaborating artist with Deus over the past 365 days or so, using that crazy British brain of his to conger up and create scenes and characters that just slip’s effortlessly into the Deus vibe. His first show on Bali’s soil, entitled ‘Deed’s not Words’ is a collection of all the work he has created for Deus, along with a plethora of pieces that he made right here in Bali in the Temple’s ‘in-resident’ artist studio … View More
Stevie Gee’s made quite an impression on us these past few days. His unique artwork, as mad as a bag of spiders, gives us a glimpse below the surface of what makes this man tick. The clock is ticking now as we count down to his exhibition. Here at the Temple we saw the preparation unfold before a curtain literally drops on his Deus gallery debut. Don’t worry we will reveal all on the evening of our ‘Slidetober Surf Music and Art fest’. Everyone loves a preview, a behind the scenes look at what transpires and unfolds. A sneaky peek so to speak. So here’s all you’re getting until the man himself…Stevie Gee… Unveils what lurks behind the theatrically blackened entrance … View More
Last Sunday nights session was made a little more special than usual. Three of our favorite artists and friends, Andrew Wellman, Robert Moore and Jim Mitchell had a little shindig, ‘You’re my type’. This Typographical gallery event brought the art lovers and enthusiasts out of the wood work. Or is that ‘wood word’? Suffice to say a few verbs were dropped and nouns capitalised throughout what turned into a crazy night. A curly side bet happened mid evening, a charity auction for Deus family friend, ‘Mr Tugu,’ Phil Carroll, which saw prints from the above as well as those from D Hump going under the hammer to help him and his family. The big draw card, a 9’6″ Deus Custom … View More
It has definitely been a long journey building the Deus Temple of Enthusiasm and all that you see with it. Ups and downs, bikes and boards…we’ve done it all. Fortunately for us there has been someone documenting this rise to fruition on a daily basis. A kid who swears he’s English…but we don’t really believe him…Tom Hawkins. Over the past year Tom has captured a little bit of everything through his lens, and made sure the world could see it by blogging about it right here on the Deus Bali Blog. Now the time has come to compile a selection of imagery and present a photographic tale in the form of an exhibition. The Exhibit entitled ‘Thus far…’ will showcase … View More
